How to Measure Eyeglass Frame Size: Lens, Bridge and Temple
The Three Core Measurements
Eyeglass frame size is defined by three numbers, usually printed on the inside of the temple in millimeters: lens width, bridge width and temple length. This system, called the boxing system, measures the frame front as though each lens were enclosed in a rectangular box. A typical reading of 52-18-140 means a 52 mm lens, an 18 mm bridge and a 140 mm temple.
Standardized measurements allow brands, distributors and their manufacturing partners to communicate sizes precisely across different factories and collections. Consistency in how sizes are recorded reduces sampling errors and ensures reorders match approved samples. Mastering these three dimensions is the foundation of specifying frames that fit a target market reliably.
Lens Width
Lens width, also called eye size, is the horizontal width of one lens measured at its widest point inside the boxing system, excluding the frame rim. Common adult lens widths range from roughly 48 mm to 60 mm, with smaller sizes for children and larger sizes for wide-fit or fashion-forward silhouettes.
Lens width is the most visible dimension because it drives the overall scale of the frame on the face. When planning a collection, distribute sizes across narrow, medium and wide options to cover a broad consumer base. Confirming lens width at sampling and inspecting it with calibrated gauges during production keeps finished frames consistent with the approved specification.
Bridge Width
Bridge width is the distance between the two lenses across the nose, measured at the narrowest point of the bridge. Typical values range from about 14 mm to 24 mm. The bridge supports much of the frame's weight, so its width and shape affect both fit and comfort, especially for wearers with different nose profiles.
Bridge geometry matters as much as the number itself. A low bridge fit, keyed saddle bridge or adjustable nose pads can change how a frame sits without altering the recorded width. For brands serving diverse markets, offering multiple bridge profiles or adjustable pad-arm designs helps the same lens width fit more face shapes and reduces the need for separate tooling.
Temple Length
Temple length is measured from the hinge screw to the tip of the temple along its full length, including the bend that hooks behind the ear. Standard adult temple lengths typically fall between 130 mm and 150 mm. The temple bend and drop control how securely the frame holds behind the ear without pressure.
Because temple length is measured along a curve, small differences in bend placement can change fit more than the printed number suggests. Specify temple length together with bend position and tip style in the technical drawing. Sampling across representative head sizes helps confirm that the chosen length works with the intended front width and does not cause slipping or tightness.
Total Frame Width and Lens Height
Beyond the three printed numbers, total frame width and lens height complete the fit picture. Total width spans the outer edges of both rims, while lens height is the vertical box measurement. Together they determine how the frame balances across the face and how much vertical coverage a lens provides.
Total front width should roughly match the width of the wearer's face for a balanced look, while lens height supports larger or smaller optical and sunglass profiles. When specifying frames, record both dimensions in addition to the core three so that factories can verify proportions and reproduce the intended silhouette across every size in a collection.
From Measurement to Production Specification
Turn measurements into a production specification by documenting each dimension, its tolerance and the measurement standard used. A clear technical sheet reduces ambiguity between design intent and factory output. Tolerances of plus or minus half a millimeter are common for lens and bridge widths, while temple length may allow slightly more variation.
