Sunglass Lens Materials Guide: Polycarbonate, Nylon, Glass & Resin
Why Lens Material Matters
Lens material determines more than how a pair looks. It affects optical clarity, weight, impact resistance, scratch resistance, UV blocking, and manufacturing cost. Two sunglasses with identical frames can feel completely different on the face and deliver different levels of eye protection based on the lens material alone. For a brand or distributor, material choice is one of the highest-impact decisions in the product specification.
The four materials most commonly used in custom sunglasses are polycarbonate, nylon, glass, and resin. Each has a distinct balance of properties and price. Selecting the right one starts with the intended use and target market, then narrows to the material that delivers the required performance at an acceptable unit cost. Understanding these trade-offs helps buyers specify lenses with confidence and avoid costly mismatches.
Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate is a lightweight, highly impact-resistant thermoplastic widely used in sport and safety eyewear. It is roughly ten times more impact-resistant than standard resin, which is why it dominates active, children’s, and industrial categories. Polycarbonate also blocks UV light inherently, so it delivers protection without relying solely on an added coating. This combination of durability, safety, and low weight makes it a workhorse material.
On the downside, polycarbonate has a lower Abbe value than some alternatives, meaning it can show slightly more chromatic distortion, and it is softer than glass, so it benefits from a hard coat. It also costs more than basic resin. For most volume eyewear programs, however, its impact performance and lightweight comfort justify the price. It remains a leading default choice for sunglasses built for activity.
Nylon / Polyamide
Nylon lenses, sometimes called polyamide lenses, are prized for their optical clarity, flexibility, and toughness. They offer excellent impact resistance and are lighter than polycarbonate in many formulations, with good resistance to cracking under stress. Nylon also accepts dyes well, which allows deep, even tints and strong color consistency across a production run. These qualities make nylon a favorite for high-end sport and performance frames.
The main considerations are cost and processing. Nylon is generally more expensive than polycarbonate and can require more careful injection or shaping, which raises unit price. For brands positioning premium active eyewear or fashion-forward designs where lens color is a signature element, nylon’s clarity and dyeing flexibility often outweigh the added cost. It pairs particularly well with mirror and anti-reflective coatings.
Glass
Glass lenses deliver the best optical clarity and the highest scratch resistance of any material. Because they are extremely hard, they resist abrasion far better than plastic alternatives and maintain their polish for years. Glass is also naturally stable, with minimal optical distortion. For premium and heritage-style products where visual purity and longevity matter most, glass remains a respected choice that signals quality.
The trade-offs are weight, fragility, and cost. Glass is heavier on the face and can shatter on hard impact, which makes it less suitable for sports and children’s eyewear. It is also more expensive and slower to produce, especially when ground to curved shapes or treated with coatings. Buyers typically reserve glass for higher-priced fashion or classic lines rather than high-volume active product.
Resin / CR-39
Resin lenses, commonly known by the trade name CR-39, are a hard, clear plastic offering excellent optical quality at a low cost. They are lighter than glass and provide very good clarity with minimal distortion. Resin is easy to tint and coat, which makes it versatile for fashion sunglasses where color options and affordability are priorities. It is one of the most economical lens materials available at scale.
Resin’s main weakness is impact resistance, which is lower than polycarbonate or nylon, and it offers less inherent UV blocking, so UV protection must come from coatings or additives. It can also be slightly thicker for the same strength. For budget and fashion lines that are not marketed for impact-heavy use, resin provides a cost-effective balance of optics and value.
Choosing a Material for Your Line
Match the material to the product’s promised performance. Sport, safety, and kids’ ranges lean toward polycarbonate or nylon for impact resistance. Premium lifestyle and classic lines may choose nylon for color depth or glass for clarity. Value fashion collections often rely on resin to keep wholesale pricing competitive. The decision should flow from the positioning story the brand wants to tell its customers.
Unit cost is not the whole picture. Weight affects comfort reviews, impact resistance affects liability and returns, and clarity affects perceived quality. A slightly more expensive material can reduce complaints and strengthen the brand’s reputation over many units. When ordering, confirm the exact material, its UV rating, thickness, and any required coatings so that samples and bulk production stay consistent.
