Lens Coatings Guide: UV400, Anti-Scratch, Anti-Fog & Waterproof

Why Coatings Matter

A lens is rarely sold in its raw state. Coatings are thin functional layers applied to the surface that extend durability, improve vision, and add protection that the base material may not provide on its own. UV blocking, scratch resistance, fog control, and water repellency are all delivered through coatings. For buyers, specifying the right coating stack is as important as choosing the lens material itself.

Modern coatings are applied in precise layers, often through vacuum deposition or dip-coating processes, and are cured to bond with the lens surface. Multiple treatments can be combined on one lens, but each layer adds cost and a step in production. Understanding what each coating does helps brands build products that perform well and hold up over time without inflating cost unnecessarily.

UV400 Protection

UV400 is the benchmark standard for sun protection. A lens rated UV400 blocks essentially all ultraviolet light with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, covering both UVA and UVB bands. This matters because UV exposure is cumulative and contributes to long-term eye damage, not just immediate discomfort. For sunglasses, UV400 protection should be treated as a baseline requirement rather than an optional upgrade.

The protection can come from the base material, as with polycarbonate, or from an added UV-blocking coating on materials like resin. Either way, the finished lens must be tested to confirm it meets the standard. Brands should request documentation that verifies UV400 performance on the final coated lens, since some coatings and tints can affect transmission. This is a core quality and compliance point.

Anti-Scratch Hard Coating

Anti-scratch, or hard, coating is a clear layer that toughens the lens surface against everyday abrasion. Plastic materials in particular benefit, because they are softer than glass and can develop fine scratches that scatter light and dull clarity. A good hard coat extends the useful life of the lens and keeps it looking new longer, which improves customer satisfaction and reduces returns.

Not all hard coats are equal. Quality depends on the coating formulation, thickness, and curing process. Premium options use a multi-layer structure that bonds firmly and resists crazing. For brands, specifying a hard coat as standard on plastic and polycarbonate lenses is a low-cost way to lift perceived durability, especially for active and everyday product lines.

Anti-Fog Coating

Fogging happens when warm, moist air condenses on a cooler lens surface, forming tiny droplets that scatter light. Anti-fog coatings change how the surface interacts with moisture so that condensation spreads into a thin, transparent film instead of visible droplets. This keeps vision clear during temperature shifts, exercise, and mask use. It is especially valued in sport, safety, and cold-weather categories.

Anti-fog performance varies by formulation and can be affected by cleaning habits, since aggressive wiping can wear the treatment away. Some modern coatings are applied to both lens surfaces and are designed to survive repeated use. When sourcing, ask about the expected durability of the anti-fog layer and whether it is compatible with other coatings, so the lens stack performs together.

Waterproof and Oleophobic Coatings

Waterproof, or hydrophobic, coatings cause water to bead up and roll off the lens rather than spreading. Oleophobic coatings do the same for oils and fingerprints, making lenses easier to clean and keep smudge-free. These treatments are commonly paired with anti-reflective coatings to protect the more delicate layers beneath and to keep everyday glasses looking crisp with less effort.

For consumers, these coatings translate directly into convenience and a premium feel. For brands, they add a meaningful differentiator at a modest cost, particularly on higher-tier models. The key is durability: a hydrophobic layer that wears off in weeks offers little value. Reputable suppliers can provide abrasion and water-beading test results to verify how long the effect lasts under normal use.

Mirror Coatings and Combined Stacks

Mirror, or flash, coatings are reflective layers applied to the front surface that reduce light reaching the eye and create a bold cosmetic effect. Available in a wide range of colors, mirror coatings are a strong tool for brand identity and fashion differentiation. They also add a layer of light management on top of the base tint, letting a single lens deliver both style and function.

In practice, high-end lenses combine several treatments: a UV400-rated base, a hard coat, optional anti-fog or hydrophobic layers, and a mirror finish. Each layer must bond cleanly to the next, so coating compatibility is a genuine production concern.
